NASA recently achieved a major milestone by capturing a stunning image of a plane breaking the sound barrier using advanced photography techniques. This effort was part of its research into shockwaves and supersonic travel.
How Did NASA Capture This?
NASA used a sophisticated air-to-air photography method known as Schlieren imaging, which allows scientists to visualize shockwaves generated by aircraft flying faster than the speed of sound. This technique helps in understanding how shockwaves interact and could lead to the development of quieter supersonic aircraft.
The Breakthrough
In a 2019 experiment, NASA’s Airborne Schlieren Photographic System recorded two T-38 Talon jets flying in close formation at supersonic speeds. The images clearly showed the shockwaves from each aircraft and how they merged. This was a significant achievement, as capturing these high-speed interactions with such clarity had never been done before.
Why Is This Important?
NASA is using this research for its X-59 QueSST (Quiet Supersonic Transport) project, which aims to create a supersonic aircraft that reduces the loud sonic boom to a quieter “thump.” This could lead to new commercial supersonic travel without the disruptive noise restrictions that currently limit such flights over land.
